APL 2026 format and rules

The Afghanistan Premier League runs on five teams, a double round-robin of 20 league matches, and a top four that goes into the playoffs. This page sets out the 2026 format as published, the points and tiebreaker rules that are still to be confirmed, and what the 2018 season did, so nothing here is presented as a rule the board has not announced.

APL 2026 league stage

Five teams. Each plays each of the other four twice. Eight matches a side, twenty matches in the league, because a fixture is one game and not two. The season record says the top four move into the playoffs. Fifth goes home. In 2018 that fifth place was Kandahar Knights, on four points.

APL 2026 knockout stage

The official site has advertised 24 matches and the words qualifiers, eliminator and grand final. Twenty league games plus four knockout games is 24. A two-semi bracket is only three knockout games. That was 2018, and 2018 lasted 23 matches — the head-to-head page for the only final prints that knockout in full. So the extra match in the 2026 figure is the whole argument for a qualifier-style finish rather than a copy of the old semis.

An August report said something else: the top side into the final, second playing third in one eliminator. That uses two knockout games and does not need a fourth team. It also does not add up to 24. Later descriptions moved to a top four. This page will not pick a winner between a press note and a match count. It will say the count and the site’s own stage names point to four knockout games, and that the pairings are to be confirmed.

What APL 2018 did

The first season ran from 5 to 21 October 2018, all of it at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Five teams played a double round-robin, eight matches each, for 20 league matches, and the top four went into two semi-finals and a final, 23 matches in all. Balkh Legends won the title, beating Kabul Zwanan by four wickets in the final, and the full results sit on the results page.

APL points and ties

The 2018 table only makes sense if a win was worth two points. Six wins, twelve points. There was no no-result in that league stage. Net run rate was published and did not have to split a tie. The 2026 tariff, including what happens if a match is tied or washed out, is to be confirmed. Super Over is standard in modern T20 knockouts and was not required in the 2018 final. Assuming it without a playing-conditions PDF is how sites end up describing a bowl-out that never existed.

APL powerplay, overseas players and DRS

A T20 powerplay is the first six overs, with a fielding restriction. That is the law of the format, not an APL quirk. The 2026 squads are 19 players each: one Afghan Icon, who captains the side, plus 18 picks from the draft in Dubai on 3 November 2026, 90 picks from a pool of 462. Every squad carries three Emerging picks, and five or six overseas players, 27 across the five teams. The squads page lists all 95 players by draft category, and the draft page sets out how the 18 rounds ran.

Early reporting on the 2026 XI mentioned a cap of four overseas players and at least one local emerging player. Treat the XI cap as reported, not confirmed: the published squads already carry five or six overseas players each, so a four-player cap, if it exists, would apply to the playing eleven only, and the board has not published it. DRS, impact subs and a reviewed free-hit wrinkle have not been confirmed here. The glossary marks those as open.

APL tie-breakers

If points finish level, NRR is the tool the 2018 table was ready to use. Head-to-head is used by some leagues before NRR and by some after. The APL’s order is not published on this page because it was not in the documents checked. A worked, clearly fake example of NRR sits on the points page so the idea is visible without being mistaken for a match. If a rule here reads as unfinished, the APL FAQ page says so in one line each.

What is still to be announced

These are the items readers ask about most, and none of them has been published by the board yet. This page will be updated when the playing conditions appear.

  • The 2026 points tariff: what a win, a tie and a no-result are worth.
  • The knockout pairings: which teams meet in each of the four knockout games.
  • The tiebreaker order: whether head-to-head comes before or after net run rate.
  • Tied matches: whether a Super Over decides league and knockout games.
  • DRS, impact substitutes and any free-hit change.
  • The playing-conditions document itself, and the grounds in the UAE.

Conclusion

What the 2026 format gives us is a short, sharp league: five teams, 20 league matches, and a top four that decides the title in four knockout games, if the advertised 24-match figure holds. The squads are set, 19 players each, and the first ball is on 27 December 2026. What is missing is the rulebook itself: the points tariff, the knockout pairings, the tiebreaker order and the playing conditions. This page says so rather than filling the gaps with another league's rules. When the board publishes them, they will be added here, and the schedule, points table and teams pages will carry the matches that follow.

Frequently asked questions

How many teams play in APL 2026, and how many matches are there?

Five teams. Each plays the other four twice, so eight matches a side and 20 league matches. The season is advertised at 24 matches, which means four knockout games if that figure holds, with the top four advancing.

How many points is a win worth in APL 2026?

The 2026 points tariff has not been published yet, so this page does not state one. In 2018 a win was worth two points: the table shows six wins and 12 points for Balkh Legends, and the same two-points-per-win arithmetic holds for every team that season.

How many overseas players can an APL team pick?

The published 2026 squads carry five or six overseas players each, 27 in total, and three Emerging picks per team. Any cap on overseas players in the playing eleven is only reported, not confirmed by the board.

What happens if an APL match is tied?

That is still to be announced. A Super Over is standard in modern T20 knockouts, but the board has not published the 2026 playing conditions, so this page does not present it as an APL rule.
